A Relaxing Trip To The Spa! from the May/June 2011 Issue
By Jen Carlson
“Go ahead and relax, undress and I’ll be back in a moment,” the masseuse said in a deep, calming voice. As he closed the door behind him, my eyes widened to the size of saucers – as in, flying saucers. Did he really just use the words “relax” and “undress” in the same sentence?!
Paying no attention to where they landed, I frantically threw my clothes off before diving under the covers, clenching them tightly up over my nose. My eyes shifted left to right, right to left as I let out a loud, gulp.
I nearly passed out when I heard the faint knock, knock and creeeak of the door. At 18 years young and a first timer in the massage room, there was one thing I found my nervous, naked self desperately wishing for (uh, besides a heavy
dose of Valium)…a quick overview of Day Spa for Dummies.

About as naïve as they come, I naturally assumed this man would be wearing a blindfold (no peeking!), HE would actually be a SHE (doh!), and this was a “back massage” (no butts about it!). On the bright side, my unshaven legs must have been a great exfoliation for his hands.
Since my initial launch (aka collision) into the spa world years ago, I’ve learned that the phrase “ignorance is bliss” only makes sense when your slice of cheesecake lost its calorie label…not when your clothes start coming off with a total stranger.
Knowing what to expect at the spa is the key to a fabulous experience, so grab some chocolate and slide on your fuzzy slippers as we pull back the curtain and dive face first into the spa world – green gooey masque and all…
Spa 101
For most women, the concept of “you time” simply doesn’t exist. No, locking yourself in the bathroom with rabid children pounding on the door screaming, “We know you’re in there!!!” doesn’t count as “you time.” Between soccer practice, school plays, the office, piles of laundry and stacks of dirty dishes, “you time” is
the thing every woman desperately needs, yet rarely receives.
Spas are everything that the daily grind is not – which is what makes them so incredible. Suddenly you are the star of the show, putty in their hands, and given only one simple task: breathe. Although every location has its own unique accommodations, there are universal tips that every spa goer should live by:
• Early is On Time! The fastest way to kill the mood of a spa service is to whirl in 30-seconds before your treatment, still reeling from that jerk that cut you off in traffic. The ambience of a spa is designed with relaxation in mind. Arriving early
allows you to take full advantage of what they offer pre-treatment. Often this includes a soft robe and slippers, a private sitting area, and a complimentary beverage.
• It’s all about YOU! While it may seem like a no brainer, we all need permission to be taken care of. Kindly stating any needs you have is very important – whether it be adjusting the pressure, the room’s temperature, or your preference for silence or quiet talking throughout a service. Remember, it’s all about
you, girl!
• Spa No-No’s! For safety reasons, your personal sanity, and out of respect for others, the spa is no place for children. It doesn’t matter if they’re on a child leash or “asleep.” Chances are, they’ll chew through the leash or wake up just as you’re being lulled into dreamland. Speaking of distractions, remember to silence electronics prior to arrival. This is one hour of your life that people can definitely wait!
Esthetics
Our face, neck and décolleté are what set our appearances a part. They show our emotion, show off new makeup trends and most of all, show our age. This is awesome... if you’re twenty!
Those that have moved beyond the Golden Years and into the Olden Years not only want relaxation, but powerhouse skin products as well. Spas offer a wide range of solutions for every skin concern through treatment facials. Problem
solved...until you grab a lengthy service menu.
How do you know whether the pumpkin/apricot enzyme or the banana sea salt facial is right for you? What can one expect in a facial anyway\? Let’s take a peek behind closed doors...
• La Questionnaire. Prior to your service, you’ll be asked to fill out a questionnaire about your skin, current medications and potential contraindications. When they ask, “Are you pregnant?” there’s no need to start sobbing about how you know you’ve gained a little weight lately, but… These unassuming questions only help your esthetician pick the safest and most effective products for your skin.
• What Not To Wear. While your face is the star of the treatment, a spa facial includes a neck, shoulder, hand and arm massage as well. Your esthetician will give you a few moments to undress from the waist up, along with removing all
jewelry prior to getting cozy under the sheets, where your modesty is fully respected throughout the treatment.
• Enzyme, What?! The menu of services offered will vary from location, yet don’t let the options scare you. Universal skin concerns such as aging, hyperpigmentation, sensitivity, acneic, oily or dry can be addressed through a variety of treatments, depending on the product line your spa uses. Your job is to share your top skin concerns with your provider, then let them work their magic!
During treatment, expect to have all makeup removed, a short-lived examination of your skin under a light, customized treatment masques, facial steam, steamed
towels, and facial and upper body massage. The only disappointment you’ll have is the moment it’s over!
Massage
The gift of human touch is a powerful thing. Massage can increase circulation, decrease stress, and cause long strings of drool to drip all over the floor if you happen to fall asleep. Not that I would know anything about that (shameful head
hang).
While the benefits of massage go on and on, so do people’s questions surrounding the service. When hesitations and unclear expectations fill the room, the treatment can feel anything but relaxing! In order to clear the air and highlight an amazing spa service, let’s take a peek behind curtain number two…
• No Question Left Behind. Prior to your service, your massage therapist may ask you questions like: Are there any areas that you want focused on today? Are there any areas you would not like work done? Typically massages cover the limbs, back, buttocks, scalp, feet and abdomen. Keep in mind that this service is all about you, your comfort level and your specific needs. Therapists want you to enjoy your service and have your best interest in mind – your questions, special requests and areas to focus/avoid are perfectly normal and welcome!
• {Un}Dress For Success! Undressing completely for body services benefits both you and your massage therapist. They are highly and skillfully trained to keep your body draped; only exposing the area they are working on. Regarding modesty concerns, it is always helpful to remember that service providers are professionals who work with a variety of body shapes and sizes on a daily basis. They are experts in balancing your privacy with performing excellent full-body service.
• Massage Options. Per your request and depending on location, detailed massage options can be tailored for you. Options might include requesting
a male or female masseuse or choosing pre-natal, lymphatic, deep tissue or
sports massage. Other treatments might utilize hot stones – large, flat, heated
stones that compliment traditional massage work.
Whether you’re a seasoned spa goer, or you’re planning your first dreamy escape this very moment, step into the spa with confidence. When you slip
into that robe sipping a cup of herbal tea, remember to stress less, because
girl…at the spa, it’s all about you!
A Tale of Two Chicks: July August 2011 Issue
BY Meredith Barth
Who says a road trip has to take you far away?
With all the fabulous shopping,
wining and dining opportunities right
here in the St. Cloud area, a good
time with great friends is just
around the corner.
As my friend Shaina and I headed out for a much needed and well-deserved night on the town, we found ourselves wondering what to do. What is it that regular chicks do – you know, when they’re not lugging around bags full of toys and snacks and diving into the middle of a toddler scuffle to rescue their car keys from the sticky hands of two tugging tots?
Since we were both wearing clothes that had yet to be smeared with the usual food and drool, we figured maybe we would be more comfortable if we remedied that. Cupcakes it is!
So we headed across town to Icing Dreams in Waite Park, because if you’re going to have a cupcake it might as well be the best cupcake in Central Minnesota!
We soon found ourselves face to face with a smorgasbord of fluffy frosted goodness. I drifted into a sugarcoated fantasy but was startled from the craving-induced stupor as someone from behind the counter greeted us. Which of these delectable little desserts we would like to take with us? Wiping the drool from my chin, I realized that a request for one of each might draw some stares, so I narrowed in on two.
Panic set in as I weighed my options and thought about leaving one behind. What if I never get another chance to taste a Root Beer cupcake? Will my life ever truly be complete without the experience of a Pink Champagne cupcake? That’s when I noticed Shaina eyeing up the Bailey’s Irish Cream and Mocha varieties and I blurted out, “Let’s get all four!”
So off we went with our box of cupcakes. As we turned toward the car, I pondered whether or not my friend would notice if I wolfed one down before we got in. But before I had the chance, we looked up to see D.J. Bitzan’s stunning new store. We just couldn’t resist; and who could blame us? The gorgeous exterior was only trumped by the inviting atmosphere and warm service we found inside. Oh, and did I mention the bling?
We wandered around, mouths gaping, as we nudged each other and repeated, “Oh! Look at this one…and that one!” Then with Christmas, anniversary, birthday and Valentine’s Day wish lists compiled along with a plan to convince our husbands that every woman needs a pair of diamond drop earrings, we emerged from our bejeweled daydreams and decided to move on to adventures that were more likely to provide instant gratification.
With cupcakes still taunting us from inside their little white box, we were back on the road – but not too far: to BIDI Boutique in Sartell, where we found handbags galore, scarves in every color and an assortment of accessories so unique it could intrigue even the most seasoned shopper. A warm welcome from behind the counter and a surprisingly peaceful atmosphere let us know we were in the right place.
While I ogled a pair of honeybee earrings and hummed my son’s favorite chubby little cubby tune, Shaina tried on a turquoise tagua necklace. This sustainable alternative to ivory is a fraction of the price and, thanks to its vegetable origin, comes with none of the guilt. And as an added bonus, it’s sturdy enough to survive a dangling child. Sold!
Eventually we heard cupcakes calling our names from the car, so we tore ourselves away from the bracelets and belts to make our way toward downtown St. Cloud. After all that shopping we were ready to kick back, relax and finally eat our tag-along cupcakes. Now the mission was to find a drink worthy of accompanying those four miniature slices of heaven.
Craving pizza and Buffalo wings, the Green Mill was an obvious choice. And it didn’t hurt that a their patio was the perfect place for us to soak up the last lingering rays of sun as they gave way to a cool summer evening.
A beautiful night on the Green Mill patio usually makes me think martinis and margaritas, but when I spotted the new wine list I had to reconsider. I was surprised to find so much variety and value on the list until I saw that it was written by Cru Wine Specialists.
With Nick’s reputation as the wine guy in St. Cloud I knew we were bound to be happy with anything we would order, but it just so happens that there were suggested pairings for wings and pizza right on the list. So we each ordered a glass. It was like having a sommelier there to order for us; a nice change of pace from the usual routine that involves shouting “Wine. Something, anything!” as I race after a small escape artist who may or may not have removed his pants.
I swear the food and wine were partners in a plot to thrill our taste buds. We were so blown away that we vowed to check out the Cru Wine Online website when we got home. That way when our husbands aren’t willing to volunteer for Operation Mom’s About to Crack, we can have
an emergency post-bedtime glass of wine and just as much fun from home.
Dinner really hit the spot, but something was still missing. Cupcakes of course! So we ordered a bottle of Moscato d’Asti and a couple of forks and finally had at it.
And boy was it worth the wait. Those little pillows of velvety cake topped with mounds of creamy frosting tasted as good as they looked. Every bite brought us closer to nirvana, a place where no one whines and everyone sleeps.
As we came down from cupcake euphoria on the ride home, we started plotting our next outing – Briar Patch Mercantile, Joseph’s Salon, Fairview Gardens, maybe even a River Bats game. Perhaps we’ll plan a day for Downtown St. Cloud to visit Bumbledee’s, Accents and Marishka’s followed by a drink at the Veranda Lounge. So many fabulous local places, so little time!
A Trip through Wine Country-Minnesota Style from the Sept/Oct 2009 Issue
By Gina Carlson

Grab your girlfriends, make like Lucy and Ethel and head to one of Minnesota’s vineyards. If you have a weekend to spare, or even just a few hours, visiting a winery is a great way to branch out and learn more about wine whether you’re a vino virgin or a seasoned sommelier! If you can’t get the girls together, kidnap your guy for a relaxing, romantic weekend – you won’t regret it.
You’ve heard more in recent years about California’s Sonoma Valley becoming a major wine producer, but it might surprise you to know that Minnesota has a vast and growing amount of wineries popping up through the countryside. I was excited to learn more and to taste the difference between these local wines and their California counterparts.
To begin, I did a bit of research online about wineries in my area. Googling the words “Minnesota Vineyards” gave me hundreds of search results, with dozens of local vineyards to choose from. Tours are available for free at many of them, and you can either make a day of it or stop in while on another outing. I convinced my husband that it would make for a different type of weekend adventure; I pictured strolling the grounds with a small group, while sipping a glass of wine, and learning about the process and getting some sun. As it turned out, this wasn’t far from the truth! We decided to go for the closest and most laid-back looking place for our first time, so we chose Alexis Bailly Vineyard in Hastings to start our winery experience. Alexis Bailly is part of the Three Rivers Wine Trail, which has a “passport” program, where your group can travel through each of these local wineries and get a taste for the many flavors that occur naturally in Minnesota.

The website advertised open hours to sample the wines and learn about the winemaking process. We drove out to Hastings and were greeted with rolling hills draped with grapevines and plenty of fresh air. We’d arrived on a release date for their newest batch of wines and the place was packed when we arrived. A band played live music in the corner and the bar held their regular tasting. This tasting was unlimited, so the price was a bit higher than usual – $10, instead of the usual $3 to $5. It also came with a souvenir glass, so we were able to just rinse and taste after each variety, and take home a reminder of our trip. Small tables were scattered around the room, as were barrels of wine going through the fermentation process and some of the upright barrels held samples of cheeses to pair with your wine.
There were no organized tours, so we were able to peruse the history, framed on the walls, and relax with our glasses on their vine-covered deck until the rain started. Even in the ever-changing Minnesota weather, we walked among some of the rows of grapes draped on wire and conversed with some of the locals, who visit frequently. We asked questions about their varieties and learned about the grape making process.
We went back inside, finished sampling a few more varieties and discussed with the bartenders what made the best pairings. A tasting was definitely one of the best experiences at the vineyard, and not just for the reasons you would think! You can learn that the seyval blanc is a delicious white wine, but is dry (and what is DRY? Isn’t the purpose of a drink to be wet?) – and that much of wine is simply a person’s preference. My personal favorite turned out to be their delicious ISIS Ice Wine, which was a smooth, sweet white wine that I would recommend for anyone.
When we felt we’d exhausted several choices of both reds and whites, we decided to buy a few bottles of our favorites and call it a day. But this first taste of Minnesota wineries wasn’t enough! I wanted to explore more and see what a guided tour held, and learn more about the process as a whole. So the decision was made to stop another weekend at Saint Croix Vineyards, also part of the Three Rivers Wine Trail.

The Saint Croix Vineyards holds a daily tour each Saturday during the prime growing season of April through December. We showed up early on a Saturday and walked around the grounds a bit, which also hosts an apple orchard and the launching site for hot air balloons. The building itself is a converted barn structure with a small deck outside for relaxing and sampling. The interior features the store (of course) and the bar area, where you can again sample each of their wines for a very nominal fee. During certain hours, they also have a free wine tasting, so it’s good to plan accordingly!
Our tour began promptly at 1:00, with the entire process explained (with time for questions!) from start to finish. After walking through several rows of the vineyard, we were brought back to the building, where the majority of winemaking really happens. At Saint Croix, groups of volunteers pick the grapes, which are placed into a machine that crushes and de-stems the grapes from the vine and seeds. This machine does the hardest part of winemaking – sorting out the non-ripe, bad grapes or stems. It spins and separates the seeds (which makes the final product bitter, if left in), but saves the best part – the crushing!
Just like that famous episode of I Love Lucy where she stomps the grapes down to be made into wine, volunteers are part of the grape picking and stomping process at Saint Croix Vineyards. You can sign up for their email updates to be part of their volunteer group for this fun opportunity. I plan on coming back for a Stomping Weekend with the girls.
At the end we were welcomed back into the large room with the bar, and wine sampling was welcome and encouraged. The bartenders and general managers stay around to answer questions and talk wine with you – discussing flavors and special processes that create their delicious wines. Some of my personal favorites were their Orchard Reserve – actually made from the apples on the property, and not grapes – and the Raspberry Infusion, a sweet dessert wine that went really well with the chocolate!
I had fun on this trip with my husband, but I know that my next visit to a Minnesota vineyard would have to include the girls! I can’t think of a better way to spend a weekend than with my best gal pals up to our knees in grapes, drinking wine and laughing our way through the vineyards. Lucy and Ethel? They ain’t seen nothing yet!

Ahhh, Spaaa!!! from the May/June 2010 Issue
By Gina Carlson
The kids are driving you up the wall, work is getting on your last nerve, you had a flat tire on your way to the grocery store and your husband just informed you that his brother (you know, the “funny one”) is flying in this weekend for an extended visit and it’s your turn to host.
Sounds like you need a spa getaway. But where? There’s not a lot of time, but you NEED it - the facial, the mani/pedi, the massage and most importantly the time with the girls. Get thee to one of the many destination and day spas right here in Minnesota!
Go ahead, book it. You need it and most of all, you deserve it!
Whether you’re in need of a break from stress, or just want a relaxing experience with your girlfriends, a spa is the way to go! There are hundreds of spas located near and far that will relax, pamper, and primp you back to your most gorgeous self - so get going!
If you’ve got a week of vacation to use, and you’re not planning to hit Disney with the family, visiting a destination spa can be very relaxing and help you find your way back to health. These spas are usually more costly, but offer luxurious amenities, along with the hiking, healthy food, and fitness classes that you desire. It is crucial to plan out these trips in advance, since many of the services are available as first-come, first-served, and if the spa is smaller, they may have a limited staff on site.

For those on a budget or time crunch, have no fear! There are a multitude of services that will get you relaxed and rejuvenated…without the long drive. Spas and salons all over the state feature massages, facials, water therapy, and more. Check around with friends for recommendations, and schedule some time for you and a pal to get away and relax…and have a cocktail afterward. You’ll be able to find a lot of day spas that have every service you would desire available right in your own backyard. Just be sure to call ahead to make sure that the services you want aren’t only offered on certain days of the week.
There are many differences and similarities to spas that are local vs. destination. For example, most spas provide the bathrobes and towels you will need during your stay, but footwear can be a question, so check with your destination if you’re not keen on being barefoot in shower and pool areas. Some spas will also have amenities available to use that require special attire – for instance, yoga classes would require loose clothing, a pool or hot springs experience would necessitate swimwear, and so on. Deb Garvey at the Marsh of Minnetonka recommends that guests ask about the full range of services available once you’ve decided on your destination so that you can adequately prepare what you’re wearing and what extra things you may want to take with you. There may also be new services available, or new experiences opening around the date of your visit. You know you’ve always wanted to try out a mud bath…so be sure to ask!

Some other recommendations that Deb had about a spa day is to plan your services into your day, so that you’re adequately prepared for the next big thing. For instance, hiking immediately after a pedicure isn’t the best idea – so plan accordingly! Arrange your schedule with enough time to freshen up and stay relaxed after a calming therapy, and be sure not to schedule a session in the pool right after you’ve had the color and cut finished – save that beautiful ‘do at least until after dinner!
To recap, there are many different options available in your average spa. So the first few things to consider are:
1.Time
How much do you have and how much can you make? Is this going to be a 30 minute venture to Turbo Nails for a nice pedicure? A day trip to the local spa for a facial and manicure? Or a week long indulgence in massages, yoga, healthy eating, and nature hikes? Depending on what you have available for time will greatly affect what you can do, and of course, your final destination.
2.Who?
Are you inviting all of your closest girlfriends? Just your mom or sister? Who you take along with you might influence your destination, the services you seek out, and leading into #3 – the budget…
3.Budget
While it would be great to have a no-holds-barred week away with all of your closest girls, it’s best to determine your budget ahead of time, and find a place that will work for all of you – so no one goes home broke! You should also watch for special deals and check websites to find deals or packages on your desired dates and services. The budget will also determine if you can make it a getaway weekend or just a few hours of pampering.
Once you’ve determined these three things, you’re on the road to bliss. It’s great to have fun companions along who want to relax and be pampered along with you, so call up your best girls and go! That hot stone therapy is calling your name… Thank you to the Marsh of Minnetoka for these spa-inspiring photos.

Chicago Trip from the July/Aug 2009 Issue

They call Chicago the Windy City and we definitely stirred things up when we blew into town for our Chicago Chicks extended weekend. Four days and three nights of fun, laughter, good food, drinks, entertainment and shopping.
I've always wanted to go to Chicago: Al Capone, jazz and blues, the Magnificent Mile, Jake and Elwood. It's a big city that maintains its Midwestern friendliness. You can party, sing the blues, eat superb seafood, shop and see incredible architecture and not feel intimidated. Chicago is an exciting city with great nightlife and fun tourist attractions and we were going to spend an extra long weekend taking in as much of Chicago's highlights in the allotted time that we had.
I called one of my best friends, my mom, to see if she wanted to go. Is the sky blue? Is chocolate part of the food pyramid (if not, it should be)? Should shopping become an Olympic sport? Of course she was game. We decided to make it a Mother/Daughter weekend and called two of my aunts and their daughters (actually, daughter and daughter-in-law) to see if they were on board and the weekend was a go! To make it even more significant, the weekend we picked was Mother's Day weekend. How fitting! It turned out to be one of the best Mother's Day weekends I've ever had!
*Susan Wolf, the concierge at the Hilton Suites Chicago/Magnificent Mile, secured our group’s name on a standby list for the morning taping of the Oprah Show. We got there bright and early (6:00 a.m.!!!) and stood in line FOREVER!
But our patience was rewarded when our entire group was escorted in to be part of the studio audience of The OPRAH Winfrey SHOW! This was the highlight on our trip and we were thrilled to see Oprah live and watch Seal perform. Plus the audience was treated to a BBQ lunch made right outside during Oprah’s Barbecue Block Party Segment. After the show, we made our way across the street to shop at The Oprah Store and find ourselves a souvenir of this momentous Chicks/Oprah experience. Perhaps someday I will get to return when CH!CKS Magazine makes it on Oprah’s Book Club list!
*Navy Pier has great gardens, sculptures, shops, rides and attractions including Chicago’s Children’s Museum, Chicago IMAX Theater, and a 150’ high Ferris wheel.
*Chicago nightlife is exciting and fun! Great restaurants with sidewalk and inside dining, piano bars, jazz and blues clubs, pubs and bars plus Chicago’s theaters are only a start when you plan for an evening out on the town! I wish we had more time!
*Saturday Night was The Second City Comedy Group and Sunday Morning was the famous House of Blues Sunday Brunch. I had to go home so I could rest from my vacation!
What we did in Chicago:
Thursday
- Land at Chicago’s Midway Airport
- Take limo to Hilton Suites Chicago/Magnificent Mile
- Walk around and explore area
- Eat at Carmine’s
- Go back to Hotel for drinks and “early” night
Friday
- Get up early to get on OPRAH SHOW!
- Sidewalk dining at Cafe Med
- Tour of the Hancock Tower
- SHOPPING, SHOPPING, SHOPPING ON MAGNIFICENT MILE!
- Drinks at Jilly’s Piano Bar
- Dinner and a beer (or two) at Dublin’s Irish Bar & Grill
Saturday
- Take Lakeshore Drive to Navy Pier!
- Have Lunch on the Pier, take funny pictures and shop
- Walk to Millennium Park and take pictures of our reflections in the “Bean”
- Tour Downtown Chicago
- Listen to the BLUES (After all, it is Chicago!)
- Get dressed up and go to The Second City Show, “Brother, Can You Spare Some Change” – Hilarious!
Sunday
- Mother’s Day Brunch at the House of Blue’s
- Pack & relax before our limo takes us to Midway Airport and back to Minnesota
Chick's Night IN from the Jan/Feb 2010 Issue
By Jenni Carlson
See more photos from this event in the Photo Albums Section!
Several nights ago, my girlfriends and I enjoyed a date with Tom Hanks. Well, that’s not entirely true; Meg Ryan came too. We plugged in the twinkle lights, turned off our cell phones, and passed around the cuticle cream. Chocolate truffles and cheap wine were divvied out in mass quantities as Tom and Meg dazzled us with their charm in You’ve Got Mail. It was bliss. It was perfection. It was…cheap! It was a Chicks Night In.
It doesn’t matter if you are a stay at home mom, a 9 to 5-er, or the soccer team chauffer, we all need a night with just the girls. Heading to a day spa can cost hundreds of dollars - generally not in the typical household monthly budget. So where does that leave us? Haggard and hopeless? No! It is up to us to declare WAR on exhaustion and solo Friday night dates with Redbox. Yes girlfriend, I’m talking to you!
The concept of the Chicks Night In requires little planning (check!), a tiny budget (check!), and a few girlfriends (check!). No need to hire a caterer, dazzle guests with ice sculptures, or send home party favors. The Chicks Night In is designed to add a little pizzazz to the typical run of the mill mom, or working gal’s life. A Chicks Night In is truly the perfect ending to any woman’s week. That is why we have gone to almost no expense to experiment with just how great, just how simple, just how entertaining, time with “the girls” can be!
On this particular evening, my friend Jill and I arrived to a table full of appetizers, a bar full of martini glasses, and a room full of laughter. Tracy, our hostess, mixed the drinks as the rest of us sampled the to-die-for fondue and got acquainted. Throughout the evening, conversation drifted from work to fashion to, of course, our all time favorite chick flicks. There were debates over who thought the Wildberry Martini tasted like a snow cone, and giggles over the latest celebrity “hotties.”
After eating our fair share of appetizers ({and some of us eating MORE than our fair share!), everyone got cozy while I pulled out a goodie basket full of Aveda skin care products. As a Licensed Esthetician (confident hair flip), I am constantly on the hunt for great skin care products. An all time favorite of mine is the Tourmaline line by Aveda, to which everyone oohed and aahed over as each item was passed around.
While products were being lathered on, one guest exclaimed, “So does this mean I’m getting lucky tonight?” To which I replied with a head-tilt and innocent eye flutter, “Of course! You will be receiving complimentary Aveda hair care to take with you!” For a moment, all that could be heard was the sound of a cricket chirping, soon followed by an eruption of laughter. Spoken like a true blonde, I guess (hey, I’m the writer – I can have whatever hair color I want!).
Steamed, aromatic towels were given out, and the laughter practically turned to snoring as the candles flickered, the background music played, and the warmth of the steam opened pores. Blissful sighs were heard around the circle as serums, lotions and masques were passed and massaged into the skin. “Now THIS is what I call a Chicks Night In!” another woman mumbled with a sleepy smile.
After everyone “got lucky” – uh, that is, after Aveda Shampure shampoos and conditioners were distributed to guests, Tracy slipped in a chick flick. The chatting continued as outfits were critiqued, secret celebrity crushes were revealed, and speculations over sequels were discussed. It wasn’t until the last drops were drank, the last chocolate covered everything was eaten, and the last lotion applied that guests reluctantly looked at their watches.
It has been said that “all good things must come to an end,” which, of course, I am reminded of every time I see a photo of my high school figure (darn aging process). Yet, as everyone bundled and headed to the door, a guest piped up. She said, “We should really do this again soon!” It was a reminder that maybe all good things don’t have to come to an end after all. In fact maybe, just maybe, this “Chicks Night In” was just the beginning.
Make Your Own Aromatic Steamed Towels – A Spa Night Essential!
- Set your crock pot or roaster on “low” – no need to bake, baste, broil, or burn!
- In the sink, soak hand towels (two per guest) in warm water. For an unexpected touch, add several drops of your favorite essential oil.
- After fully wringing out the excess water, roll towels and place in crock pot or roaster.
- Let steam for 20 minutes prior to use.

City That Never Sleeps-NY, NY from the March/April 2010 Issue
By Gina Carlson

“I want to be a part of it, New York, New York… I want to wake up in the city that never sleeps…” croons Frank Sinatra.
This is the city you need to see! The lights. The sounds. The sights. The shopping. If you’re looking for a trip with the girls unlike any other, New York City is the ultimate place for you! Delicious food, spectacular sights, and world class shopping await you in this trendy destination.

Recently, I ventured to New York City for a work trip with my boss and coworkers – who all happen to be good friends! Having been to New York previously, I was very excited to go back for another visit to see the sights, shop, and live like Carrie from Sex and the City!
The sights to see are numerous and range from the touristy (Times Square), the historical (Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island), to the somber (Ground Zero), to trendy (the 5th Avenue), to much, much more! And as you know, New York is a city filled with people, places and things. So the best idea is to start with where you’ll stay.
New York is divided into many boroughs, and each is a small city unto itself. If you’re looking to do the majority of the touristy things, Manhattan is your destination. (I told you I was a Carrie, didn’t I?) The hotels abound – ranging from the familiar chains to the fancy boutiques. Depending on what you want for an experience, the options are endless! One of my favorite boutique hotels is the Hotel Roger Williams. The amenities are luxurious, the central midtown location was perfect for short walks to the sights and the subway, and it was just far enough off the beaten path that our nights were quiet and uneventful. On this most recent trip, the girls and I stayed at the Marriott Marquis – which is right in the middle of Times Square – a different experience to be sure! It was a much larger hotel with conference rooms and restaurants all inside, but still great service. Of course, there are numerous places to stay, no matter your preference. Just be sure to map out the exact location from where you’re planning to visit so that you can quickly slip back for an afternoon nap after your long night out!

Once you’ve got the place, it’s time to make your plans. The city has more than enough attractions to keep you busy for approximately the rest of your life. So choose wisely! Some of the sights require advance tickets while some are drop in as you please. Some of my favorites which you’ve all seen on the silver screen are the Empire State Building and the Observation Deck at Rockefeller Center which offer fantastic views of the whole city (try Rockefeller Center at night!); the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island Museum need tickets in advance but are a great way to view history; Grand Central Station is the epitome of hustle and bustle; Central Park hosts (seemingly) the only trees in the city and great walking trails; the many famous museums (including the Museum of Modern Art, the Met, The Guggenheim, and hundreds more!) will keep you busy for days; and the with experiences of walking through Little Italy (where you should eat), Chinatown (where you should purse shop), and down Fifth Avenue (where you’ll want to buy everything!) are experiences not to be missed!
As if the shopping and sightseeing weren’t enough to keep you busy for several weeks, there are many other great things to see while you’re in town! If you’re a planner, you can try to get into the taping of some of your favorite shows – Letterman, the Today Show – even Maury Povich! Of course, you’ll want to plan a night out, and seeing a show on Broadway is your #1 ticket! Shows are always changing, but you’re sure to find one you’ll enjoy. You can pick from Phantom of the Opera, The Lion King, Jersey Boys, and even Hair (to bring you back to your high school days). One of the best productions I’ve seen is Wicked – if you missed the tour through Minnesota be sure to check it out – their whole stage and production is not to be missed!

But before heading out to a show, you’ll find yourself wondering what there is to eat in this town. You won’t be wondering for long, though, because New York streets are filled with food – pretzels, hot dogs, pizza, and a variety of ethnic cuisines. And the restaurants are to die for! There are many fantastic options on every corner, featuring every kind of cuisine you could want. Just be sure to ask your concierge at the hotel if there is a place that you absolutely shouldn’t miss, or to get you to the best place for what you’re craving!

I would consider myself a little bit of a foodie. My husband and I eat out quite a bit, so I’m always open to new cuisines and looking for the best experiences that restaurants have to offer. Some of my personal favorites for dining in the city are those with true dedication to the whole experience, and you can’t go wrong with Les Halles; featuring delicious French food – if you’re brave, you’ll even try the escargot! On this trip, our group dined out at Bar Americain. We had a wonderful dinner – delicious scallops, perfectly cooked steaks, and wine, wine, wine! Our first night in the city we called the concierge of our hotel who helped us get a reservation at La Masseria, a fantastic Italian restaurant just blocks from Times Square, from which we stumbled back to our hotel with full bellies. If you’re looking for just good food in a shorter time frame, some great spots are the couple of Caliente Cab restaurants (try a mojito!) and the hundreds of delis and family owned restaurants that line every street. Don’t forget to try new things and branch out from the norm!
New York City is one place you can visit time and again and still not see it all! So grab your girlfriends, pack your bags and those Jimmy Choos, and hop the next flight for the Big Apple! You’ll be shopping, dining, and reviewing shows like a pro in no time!

Gretchen Winters from Bursch Travel is an expert on NYC Travel. Here are some great tips to make your trip the best it can be!
What to pack
Plan on wearing casual clothes as you do sightseeing and are in and out of cabs and on the subway. Black is the color of choice worn by New Yorkers. So plan around that basic theme and you will blend in. Comfortable shoes are a must as you will do a lot of walking. Tennis shoes make you stand out as a tourist so you might want to get a pair of comfortable shoes like Born’s or Merrill’s. Also an all-weather coat with a hood is a good option. The hood is good in the rain because umbrellas are impossible to manage on the streets with the crowds. Nothing is really very dressy anymore including the theatre but if you do plan to go to a high end restaurant you will want to bring something nice to wear because many of those have dress codes (i.e. jacket for men)
Transportation
Subway: Serves nearly all areas of NYC and is the best value method of transport in the city at just $2 per journey. If planning to use public transport for the duration of your stay a Metrocard costs $7 for 24 hours unlimited travel on the subway or bus. A 7-day Metrocard costs $24.
Metrocards can also be used on a pay as you ride basis. For example a $10 Metrocard of this type gives you six trips on a bus or subway and a free transfer between the two on each trip. Maps of the subway can be obtained from stations and are posted in the stations and on the subways.
Bus: The bus system operates routes not served by the subway such as crosstown (east-west) trips. Since buses stop every two blocks, progress can be slow but fares are very reasonable at $2 for any length of trip. Note that you need the exact change when boarding a bus so always keep a couple of dollars handy. Or you can use a Metrocard.
Taxis: The yellow cabs that are plentiful throughout the city serve as a quick and easy means of getting from A to B. You can catch one outside major buildings and hotels, or simply stick your hand into the air and shout out - you’ll get a cab sooner or later. They are very reasonably priced so if there are 3 or 4 people traveling together it would be about the same price as taking the subway.
Fun Fact: The Staten Island Ferry offers wonderful views of downtown Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty plus it is free to ride; it departs from Battery Park Pier.
Shopping
Shopping is wonderful in NYC! Century 21 Department Store is the most popular discount department store in Lower Manhattan (think TJ Maxx, Marshalls, & Filenes on steroids!) and of course Macy’s on 34th and Broadway. You can browse the shops on 5th Avenue or check out some of the specialty stores in the Times Square areas such as the M & M Store and the Hershey’s Store. Canal Street in Chinatown is the best place to do your “knock-off” shopping.
Food
New York has more restaurants per square mile than any other city in the world and given the city’s ethnic composition it’s no surprise that nearly all global cuisines are represented. Check out Little Italy for great Italian food or “Carmines” located in the Theatre District. Don’t forget about the amazing NYC pizza. Plus all the great NYC delis. And you will want to grab a real NYC hot dog from one of the many street vendors during your stay.
Tipping
Hotel Doorman: $1 for hailing a cab.
Bellhop: $1-2 per bag.
Hotel housekeepers: $2-5 per day.
Waiters/Waitresses: 15-20%.
Taxi drivers: 15-20%
Tour Guides: $5 for 1/2 day tour, $10 for a full day tour
Sightseeing & things to do
Circle Island Tour – A great way to see all of Manhattan Island. This tour is by boat that circles all of Manhattan with a guide pointing out all the sites and sharing lots for fun facts.
Broadway Theatre – For tickets at 25% to 50% off the usual price, head to TKTS (Duffy Sq., W. 47th St. and Broadway). There’s usually a good selection of shows available, but don’t expect to see the latest hits. The kiosks accept cash and traveler’s checks -- no credit cards. The Times Square location is open Monday-Saturday 3-8 and Sunday 11-7:30, as well as Wednesday and Saturday 10-2 for matinee shows.
Statue of Liberty Tidbits – If you want to get to Liberty Island and/or Ellis Island, take a taxi or subway to Battery Park & take the Ferry. The ferry leaves every ½-hour starting at 8:30 a.m. Get your Ferry tickets in the bricked-in area before getting in the Ferry waiting line. Ask if you are in doubt. Get one of the first ferries for shorter lines. Allow several hours for this excursion.
Destination Duluth from the May/June 2009 Issue
By Gina Carlson
See more photos from this trip in the Photo Albums Section!
If you’re looking for a place featuring everything from great scenery, gorgeous accommodations, and plenty of places to eat, drink, and dance with your girlfriends, Duluth is your destination! It’s one of those cities you can visit every year and still not get to see it all.
When you arrive, the sites around Duluth are plentiful and busy! There are many relaxing activities you can start with; everything from walking along the boardwalk, to visiting the Omnimax Theater, the Great Lakes Aquarium, the Maritime Museum, or the Glensheen Mansion. If you’re looking for a little more excitement, there are several casinos nearby where you might win big, and the Renegade Comedy Theater will make you laugh so hard you’ll cry!
After your daytime activities, you’ll definitely want to go out for dinner and some cocktails. For a down-home experience and a relaxed atmosphere, the Black Woods Bar and Grill offers magnificent views of the city, and plenty of appetizers to choose from including the very popular, very juicy Bulldog Bites, to the more exotic crab cakes which are cooked in a champagne sauce. (Cooking the liquor burns off the calories, right?) Of course, they’ve also got a lot of other delicious items to choose from and a full bar.

If you’re looking for something out of your comfort zone, try Pizza Lucé. This very popular pizza joint has some of the best pizza you’ll ever try! It’s got a funky atmosphere with bright colors and eclectic decor, while the fabulous pizzas vary from the simple vegetarian to the more unusual shrimp and pesto pizza. If a slice isn’t your piece of heaven, they also feature pastas, hoagies, and great salads. Their full list of beer and wines will also perfectly compliment your delicious baked potato pizza.
No girls’ weekend is complete without a few drinks and some dancing, so when you’re ready to belly-up to the bar, Grandma’s is a hot spot to check out. The happy hour specials are half-price, and it’s got a wide variety of customers, so you can do some people-watching. If you don’t mind the young crowd, check out the Red Star Nightclub. They feature everything from rock to hip hop, and even salsa dancing lessons on weeknights, while the drinks flow freely, and are quite cheap – $5 mojitos will leave you minty, and the pomegranate martinis are so smooth you’ll forget what’s in them! They also leave their fruit for the drinks soaking in liquor, so if you munch those olives or cherries, put the yellow cab number in your purse first!

One of my criteria for any getaway is great lodging. You need a place to toss your bags, relax, and get a much-coveted full night of sleep where you’re not worried about bedspreads that have never been washed or that weird stain on the carpet. Duluth has many great places to stay, but my two favorites are The Inn on Lake Superior and the South Pier Inn.
The Inn on Lake Superior is directly on the shore and has been recently renovated, so you won’t find any purple flowered bedspreads here! Soft sheets, nice bathrooms, and big windows give you a great space to relax in; while the hotel also has everything that makes for a glamorous weekend with your girls – a heated rooftop pool with a view, and an indoor hot tub and sauna to kick back and gab around. The hotel also hosts a small bonfire on the shore each night where you can make your own s’mores over the fire, and the kitchen brews Starbucks 24 hours a day!
The South Pier Inn is right next to the lift bridge, and is great for groups of people. Each room features a personal whirlpool and a balcony overlooking the water with magnificent views. It’s the perfect place to spend time sipping your cocktails or watching movies while admiring the special added touches of your washcloths folded into little ducks!
Both of these hotels are great for any type of traveler, and have a lot of great amenities that make for a fun and relaxing space to veg in or stumble into at three in the morning. Just remember to take lots of pictures to capture the memories of this amazing destination!
Spa-riffic from the March/April 2009 Issue
By Tracy Zwilling
See more photos from this trip in the Photo Albums Section!
A reunion for three high school friends was a terrific idea - celebrating our reunion with a spa trip was an even better idea. So we cleared our schedules, re-arranged plans and coordinated families so the three of us could get away for three days and two nights of fun with no responsibilities.
This was the first spa weekend any of us had ever experienced, and our expectations were high. It was also my very first Chick weekend...a weekend with just the girls.
We loaded up the car, checked our cell phones and left for the Brainerd Lakes area. Cragun’s Resort in Brainerd had a Girlfriends Weekend Spa package that sounded just perfect for us.
The drive went quickly as we caught up with each others’ lives, fielded phone calls from kids and husbands and speculated about how good a face massage would really feel.
We dumped our bags in our rooms and immediately went down to the bar to order a pizza and have a beer. It was the perfect meal for starting our weekend. After dinner, we made our way back to our rooms, started a fire in the fireplace and relaxed with a bottle of wine, talking late into the night and anticipating the spa fun we would have in the morning.
Breakfast was an early affair in the dining room. After coffee, rolls and fruit, we made our way to the spa. MJ, the manager, met us in the reception area and led us into the lounge so we could fill out forms and comfortably wait until our individual rooms and massage therapists were ready for us. The view of Gull Lake through the patio doors was serene in the morning light.
MJ came for me and led me to a small room, which had a relaxing ambiance with dim lighting and recorded sounds of wildlife, trickling water and loons playing softly in the background. The first spa treatment was a face massage. I felt myself succumbing to total relaxation, as MJ used oils to gently massage my face, head and neck. The fine crystals in the lotion gently exfoliated, massaged and tightened my skin. If I didn’t look 20 years younger, I certainly felt it. It was the most exquisite half hour I ever experienced...until she moved on to the Sole Sensations massage.
Rubbing specially cut and formulated shea butter from my knees down to my toes, MJ massaged the butter, with its coarse crystals, into my legs, around the soles of my feet and between my toes. Toes have never known such joy.
Following the sole sensations massage, the three of us met in the lounge and visited while rehydrating with bottled water. We discussed options for our 1:30 body massage, and decided to give the hot stone massage a try.
After a quick snack, we made our way back to the spa. I was prepared for another incredible spa experience. As the heated stones were rubbed along my overworked muscles and creaky joints, I could feel the warmth penetrating my arms, legs and torso.

The three of us met again in the lounge after our massages and decided to use the rest of our afternoon to try out the hot tub and explore the grounds. Our visit was between seasons, so it was too cool to swim at the beach and too warm to snowmobile or ski. However, we didn’t mind, and we used our time to continue our girl talk.
For dinner we decided to leave our little oasis and venture into Baxter. The town boasts a wide variety of restaurants, and we had no problem finding exactly what we were craving – big burgers, delicious fries and cold tap beer. When our hunger was satisfied, we headed back and spent another evening with good wine and even better conversation.
The next morning, after lingering over many cups of coffee, we decided it was time to return to reality. Already our cell phones were ringing and our families were asking when we’d be home.
I gave my two friends a hug and I wondered when we would be able to squeeze in another weekend like this. Between running businesses, kids and one living in the middle of a major remodeling project, it would take another cosmic shift to get us together again anytime soon. Fortunately they are only a phone call and email away.
We promised each other it would not be another 25 years before we would run away again, that another trip would be planned soon. I don’t know how soon it will happen, but I will always remember this weekend as my very first Chicks trip with my oldest Chicks friends.
Not all spas are alike...
Say the word spa and women start sighing and wistfully thinking of scented candles, massages and pedicures. But not all spas are alike. We’ve broken them down into three basic types, but the kind of spa differs as much as the price.
Visiting a day spa is an easy way to take a break and treat yourself. Many day spas offer a wide range of massages, facials, body wraps, manicures and pedicures. Some even have saunas and whirlpools.
Getaway spas include some kind of accommodation and are more expensive. Destination spas are often all-inclusive and focused on a particular program, while some spas exist as part of a larger resort or hotel.
At medical spas, you’ll find medical staff working alongside spa therapists. Owned or operated by doctors or licensed healthcare professionals, many offer medical and non-medical treatments, and some offer overnight accommodations.
No matter what type of spa you want to experience, visit or call ahead to figure out details such as pricing and the types of products they use. Ask if their therapists are trained and licensed, if they use allergy-free products and what types of services they provide.
With a little homework, your spa visit will leave you feeling refreshed and revitalized. You will be ready to face your family and boss with a renewed sense of energy while you’re secretly planning your next trip.
Weekend with the Girls! from the November/December 2010 Issue
By Gina Carlson
It's been a stressful few months as the kids have headed back to school and you’ve been bombarded at work. Luckily for you, it’s the perfect time to plan a weekend getaway with your best girls - you can do some holiday shopping or get in some R&R before the craziest time of year begins and while the deals are hot!
There are new shops opening every day, and plenty of places for you to spend time relaxing, whether your version of relaxed is sightseeing, shopping, or spending the day at the spa. But we know you’re busy, and planning something isn’t really at the top of your to-do list these days, so here’s a quick rundown of places both near and far for you to take a weekend to check in and check out!
Central MN
ou to take a St. Cloud and the surrounding community has a variety of options for you and your girls if you've only got a weekend, or even just a day! There are many places to start your shopping here, and depending on what you're looking for, the mall at Crossroads Center will probably fit the bill! It boasts numerous clothing stores, shoe stores, and everything in between. Plus there are other places to shop, such as Herberger's, Kohl's, and more throughout the town, but you won't want to miss some of these other specialty shops:
~Art As You Like It: a place to create your own pottery and clay items, both decorative and functional.
~Bumbledees: a unique store full of arts, antiques and the eclectic.
~Marishka's: a quaint boutique filled with a variety of antiques, home decor, jewelr, furniture, clothing and much more.
~On A Lark: Owned and operated by the College of Saint Benedict, this unique store is full of extraordinary gifts, jewelry and home accessories.
~Northern Brights: a boutique featuring unique handbags, jewelry, gifts, art and fashions.
~BIDI Boutique: BIDI (Because I Deserve It) is a unique shop for women's clothes and accessories.
Of course, once the shopping is finished, you'll need nourishment. St. Cloud is ripe with places to dine, and there are many choices, no matter your budget! If you're looking for a more authentic experience, you can check out White House on St. Germain for a variety of cuisine from around the world. If you're going for casual, Mexican Village, Veranda Lounge and Wine Bar, DB Searle's, or Green Mill are reasonably priced with consistently good food.
Once you're filled to the brim, it's time to head out for some non-shopping related activities! If you're on a budget, or just looking for beautiful vistas to view while you gab, check out Munsinger Gardens. If you're looking for something else (or avoiding the ever-changing weather), you can also check out the historic Paramount Theater, or the Comedy Club at Rum Runners.
While there are too many beautiful Bed & Breakfasts in the area to list them all, there are also hotels available if you've got too big a group going with you. The Radisson Hotel downtown has amazing views from the higher floors and really comfortable beds, while The Grand Stay Residential Suites are also a great option for groups. Their suites are available with kitchenettes, and multiple connecting rooms, so you can stay up late chatting and showing off the day's purchases.
Twin Cities
The Twin Cities are filled with more activities than you can enjoy in just one weekend. However, there are quite a few that stand out and make for a perfect girl's weekend! (Tip: Determine your "Must-See" list before deciding where to stay!)
The Mall of America is the first thing people think of when they hear about the Twin Cities, and it's a great place to stop! Every store imaginable is held within the three levels of shops and restaurants, and you can find any coveted pair of shoes within these stores. But don't stop just there! Grand Avenue in Saint Paul hosts a variety of shops that sell apparel and accessories, while 50th and France in Edina has everything on your list, including upscale boutiques for you to browse (or buy, if your budget allows). If you are looking for a small scale, there are several fun places to check out for your deepest desires -- the Fun Sisters boutiques in Minneapolis and Saint Paul Skyway area are a must-see, and Bella Boutique in Mendota Heights has fashionable clothing and accessories for chicks of any age! Both Fun Sisters and Bella Boutique have varying hours, so check before you go.
Aside from the shopping, the Twin Cities is also known for its major theater district. There are a variety of traveling Broadway shows that come through, and the Guthrie Theater itself is a major work of art! There are many museums that offer free or reduced rates on certain days of the week, including the Minneapolis Institute of Art, the Weisman Art Museum, and, of course, the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden with the giant spoon and cherry piece. For those who need a break from the city life, Minnehaha Falls is also a nice stop in any season.
Once you've determined your list of to do's, you can decide where to spend your sleeping hours. There are a plethora of hotels around the city -- just be sure to choose one close to your area of things to see so you can spend more time relaxing. Some of the most beautiful places to stay with your girls (for the ultimate pampered experience) are the Graves 501 or Radisson hotels downtown Minneapolis. The Saint Paul Hotel in downtown Saint Paul with its rich history and ornate furnishings, or the beautiful and historic Nicollet Island Inn.
Whether or not you're a foodie and you just love to eat, there are plenty of places to dine if you budget is $20 or $200! In Minneapolis, check out Crave for some sushi, Zelo if you're on your way to a show, Hell's Kitchen for their amazing brunch, Brit's Pub for some fish and chips, or the Melting Pot for a fun night of fondue! In Saint Paul, notable places are Pazzaluna for authentic and delectable Italian food, the Saint Paul Grill for savory steaks, or Patrick McGovern's for a gigantic Cobb salad! If you're in the suburbs making your rounds, check out some of the greats like PF Chang's for great Asian cuisine, Wildfire for a steak, McCormick and Schmick's for the best seafood in town, and the Cheesecake Factory for everything -- but most importantly the biggest and best selection of cheesecake and desserts anywhere!
Chicago
Chicago is just a short ride away! It's a great place you can visit again and again and never see it all -- so grab some girls and head out to the city!
The Chicago area is filled with copious amounts of things to see and do. There are museums, theaters, and thousands of shops for you to get in your fill. (Tip: If you're planning to do some sight seeing, check out the CityPass option, which will get you discounts at various attractions and can save you money and time.)
Some of the must-see areas in the city are a stop at Millennium Park to see the sculpture gardens and the giant "bean," but also to do some fun people-watching. Meantime, Navy Pier has everything from a ferris wheel to shops and circus shows, so it's a great place, too. The theater district also hosts a variety of different shows, whether your interests are in music, Broadway, or puppeteering -- there's something for everyone!
Of course, you can't miss all the great places to eat around the entire city. There are thousands of places with a variety of cuisines, so break out your foodie hat and try out the many different restaurants that can't be found anywhere else! Some notables in the area are the Eggsperience Pancakes and Cafe for delicious breakfast or brunch, Shaw's Crab House for savory seafood, Texas de Brazil for an amazing salad bar and more meat than a persona can eat, or the Bin Wine Cafe for unique foods and an extensive wine selection.
Though Chicago is a short drive away, it's not something you'll do in one single day, so you'll need a place to stay. Some of my personal favorites in the area are the Hard Rock Hotel, which is walking distance from Millennium Park and many great restaurants. The W Chicago Lakeshore Hotel is a great place to stay with your gal pals -- the rooms are large, concierge is very knowledgeable, and it's walking distance to Navy Pier and many area theaters. For a boutique on a budget the Burham Hotel is worth a look. Of course, check your location in reference to your attractios -- and avoid the downtown traffic!
Vegas
It may have just been a few stressful months, or it might be that it’s been too long since your last girl’s weekend. If either of these is the case, Las Vegas just might be your getaway this year. You can find many good deals on flights and hotels if you keep your eyes peeled – so start checking online or call a travel agent! For every budget, there’s a great place to stay – including the newly renovated Planet Hollywood, Treasure Island, and the Mirage, to the popular Caesar’s Palace, Wynn Hotel, and Bellagio.
Vegas has no shortage on things to do, and there are a variety of things for every price point. If you’re on a budget, you can spend the entire weekend just wandering the strip – exploring the hotels and casinos – from the Bellagio’s blown glass ceiling, to the circus show and arcade at Circus Circus, to the lions at the MGM hotel – the amount of things to see will be sure to keep you busy for hours!
Of course, if you’re out for activities, you can check out the M&M Megastore, gamble at any of the casinos, walk up and down the strip, and check out the Fremont Street Experience. If you’ve had enough walking, stop and see any one of the shows out on the strip – for those who love music, Cirque du Soleil’s Elvis show is a new hit, while the LOVE show features the music of the Beatles, and Blue Man Group will leave you with rocking rhythms! If you’re looking for other shows, there is everything from Broadway shows to famous magicians and stand up comedians.
Vegas does it right in many areas, but especially with food. One place you won’t need to hedge your bets on great food is the buffet at the Wynn Hotel. Their brunch is populated with thousands of items to choose from, and is among the best food I’ve ever eaten. Other places you’ll want to check out are La Creperie in the Paris hotel for savory or sweet, Wichcraft in the MGM hotel for sandwiches with a twist, Binion’s steakhouse and Red Sushi on Fremont Street, or Olives in the Bellagio for some of the most fresh ingredients you’ll ever eat. There is also a new type of dining experience cropping up around Vegas – the food truck. You’ll get a gourmet experience from these traveling vehicles – but look for Fuku – a great bet for burgers. At the end of the night, stop off at the Minus 5 Ice Bar for an unforgettable experience – just like in the James Bond movie Die Another Day. Everything – even the chairs(!) at this bar are made from sculpted ice – but trust me, it won’t leave you out in the cold!
You Just Hit the Jackpot! A MN Casino Weekend from the January/February 2011 Issue
By Gina Carlson
The weather has a chill, it’s after the holidays so your checkbook is running on empty, but you’re still feeling the stress of the season. What’s a girl to do? Grab your cell phone, call up a few friends, and head out to the nearest casino for a night away with the girls!
I know we often think of the casinos as strictly a place to lose some of your hard earned dollars to a machine, but there is much more to them than that! Minnesota casinos have more to see and do than ever before and are competing with the likes of Atlantic City and Vegas.
My personal choice for a weekend with the girls is Mystic Lake Casino in Prior Lake. The entire casino and hotel were recently renovated, and the new, beautiful spaces are the epitome of luxury. (Bonus: the air purification systems are also top-notch, so the smell of smoke is nearly non-existent! A welcome change for all of us and our health.) While Mystic has some of the largest gaming facilities in the state, they are also known for their awesome eats! Their buffet has hundreds of items with international and your favorite American fare, as well as a prime rib buffet on weekends. If your friends are the type to dress up and dine, you can also try il Premio, which hosts an elegant atmosphere serving delicious Italian food. (And, the lobster ravioli is to die for!) Fear not, the prices are reasonable, and if you’re more comfortable in jeans, you won’t be underdressed!
Mystic’s renovation has also produced a lot more attractions besides gambling and food. Their spa is fantastic; a place that you can get a variety of services for reasonable prices – massages, waxes, facials – they do it all! If you’re more active and are looking for a fun group activity, you can gather the girls and go bowling in their new alley, stop into their fitness center to take a yoga class, use the pool and hot tub, or rent some skates and use their new skating rink! Of course, you should always plan ahead and make it a weekend (or weeknight) when the Mystic Showroom has a concert or comedian playing that you can check out and enjoy!
Also at the top of my list are Grand Casino Hinckley and Mille Lacs. Although they aren’t as big as Mystic Lake, Grand Casinos are also great places to stop in and treat yourself to a weekend.
If your best friends are scattered around the state, Hinckley is a great place to stop, because of its central location off a major highway. It also has two different options for accomodations; the attached hotel or the Grand Hinckley Inn located across the parking lot. The Inn will give you a break from the hubbub of the casino, and if you request a poolside room for your group, you can easily relax in one of the hot tubs. The casino itself has great gambling opportunities, of course, but it also features an arcade if you can’t find a babysitter (or just want to feel like a kid again).

After you’ve hit the jackpot, you can stop at the Grand Harmony Spa for a massage or facial – making you feel like a million bucks! You can also stop in the gift shop for some treasures – jewelry, clothes, and souvenirs for those who were left at home.
When you’re worn out from the shopping and ready to nosh, stop at the Grand Buffet for a huge variety of treats (especially on their seafood night!) or at the Winds Steakhouse to fill up before the real fun begins – when you stop at their main stage (indoors in the winter, outdoors in the summer) for comedians or fantastic music acts.
Grand Casino Mille Lacs offers the same amenities, but offers the Grand Northern Grill for American fare and the Waterfront Restaurant, located on the water, for breakfast or lunch. If you’ve ventured north during the winter months, ask at the resort to take out the cross country skis to enjoy the views and to remember why we live in Minnesota. (It’s beautiful, just in case you’ve forgotten.)
If none of these strike your fancy, or you’re looking for something more off the beaten path, Treasure Island is similar to it’s namesake in Vegas (though not nearly as big). The have a main stage with many different acts throughout the year that appeal to the younger crowd (yes, that’s still you!), as well as bowling, an arcade, indoor pool, golf course, a large bingo room, a nicely laid out buffet and more! Jackpot Junction in Morton also features a buffet and restaurants like the Full Deck Grill for burgers and fries and the Wabasha Creek Restaurant to dine with a view. Request a room with a whirlpool where you all can soak your feet, relax and crack open that bottle of wine.

A weekend away at a casino will leave you feeling refreshed and relaxed. Simply decide on the casino you’d most like to visit, call ahead to make a reservation and ask about their amenities. Make sure you sign up ahead of time for the casino’s Club Card, too. They are usually free, and after you’ve signed up, they will send you newsletters with discounts on rooms and services – and it never hurts to get a good deal. With so much to do, see, and eat, you’ll leave feeling like a million bucks!
